Heinlein mentions powering spaceships with nuclear bombs in his 1940 short story " Blowups Happen". The idea of rocket propulsion by combustion of explosive substance was first proposed by Russian explosives expert Nikolai Kibalchich in 1881, and in 1891 similar ideas were developed independently by German engineer Hermann Ganswindt. The project was eventually abandoned for multiple reasons, including the Partial Test Ban Treaty, which banned nuclear explosions in space, and concerns over nuclear fallout. Six non-nuclear tests were conducted using models. Early versions of this vehicle were proposed to take off from the ground later versions were presented for use only in space.

Project Orion was a study conducted between the 1950s and 1960s by the United States Air Force, DARPA, and NASA for the purpose of identifying the efficacy of a starship directly propelled by a series of explosions of atomic bombs behind the craft- nuclear pulse propulsion. While doing Tradecraft for the Railroad, one may find Gen 1 and Gen 2 synths and two machine gun turrets. There is also a large door locked behind an inaccessible terminal. Covert Ops magazine, "Whistling In The Dark," located in an office on a desk that has a computer with a globe. There are two fusion cores, hazmat suits, and other apparel. There are radscorpions, a turret, and several synths. Inside there are multiple terminals and doors that can be picked. The basement can be accessed through a locked door southeast of a tipped orange railway car south of Drumlin Diner, inside a sewer pipe entrance that is hidden behind vines. It cannot be activated until Tradecraft is started. A bookshelf in the basement, under the only working light in the room, contains an elevator to the Switchboard. The building contains three floors, including a top floor with kitchen, the first floor with another kitchen and a serving area for coffee, and the basement which is a separate area from the rest of the store.
Following the Institute's purge of the Switchboard, Slocum's Joe #38 is now occupied by synths and fortified with turrets and fragmentation mines. Post-War, the Railroad used the Switchboard as their main headquarters until it was raided by the Institute. The agency's latest attempt to reduce shop traffic was "Operation Rotten Egg", suggested by an unnamed general, which would have involved covering the store with foul odors.
Their aim was to run the shop as poorly as possible to avoid customer traffic, but despite their efforts, they were still seeing increases in sales as of September 2077.
The Switchboard was used as a secret base of operation for the Defense Intelligence Agency, with the assigned DIA personnel also operating the shop above to act as cover. Slocum's Joe #38 housed a secret pre- War government facility called the Switchboard with two entrances: one from the basement and another from a sewer pipe covered in vegetation outside the city.
